Proverbs 1:1-7 New King James Version The Beginning of Knowledge
1 The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel:
2 To know wisdom and instruction, To perceive the words of understanding,
3 To receive the instruction of wisdom, Justice, judgment, and equity;
4 To give prudence to the simple, To the young man knowledge and discretion—
5 A wise man will hear and increase learning, And a man of understanding will attain wise counsel,
6 To understand a proverb and an enigma, The words of the wise and their riddles.
7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, But fools despise wisdom and instruction.
SERMON NOTES: The Quest for Wisdom
The book of Proverbs was written to guide the reader in the quest for wisdom.
The first half (chapters 1-9) are an introductory course on biblical wisdom, with Solomon writing to us as a father teaching his son.
Second, Proverbs are principles, not promises. Proverbs show us how things should work within God’s creation.
Proverbs cannot make us wise, only God can. Even though Proverbs is the book of biblical wisdom, they cannot make us wise themselves.
We must pray and have faith for God to use His Word to make us wise, but without His illumination, these words will never change or impact our hearts.
Also, Proverbs are not one's day to day activity to apply immediately.
There is a kind of wisdom that is worldly and it is not always truthful or wise.
So, wisdom comes from God.
Wisdom comes from fearing God.
Wisdom comes from knowing God.
From this, we can get understanding from God perspective.
This is what Proverbs is all about - wisdom for living before God.
